A reminder that it is our mortality that makes life so precious and that growing old is a privilege that many are not afforded.
Like precious and friable objects uncovered in archeological digs, these works, suggestive of museum pieces, express faith in endurance despite the ravages of time. They balance mass against negative space, that which survives against that which has been lost, to evoke perfect forms that are still fully realised, seen clearly in the mind’s eye. Time breaks and degrades all things natural and unnatural, all human lives and artefacts, yet even undergoing these processes of destruction our works and our lives may retain strength and grace. The body breaks; the spirit is intact.
These works strikingly juxtapose integrity of form against distressed surface. Pure classical forms, avowing the continuity through millenia of an essential human grace and dignity in the face of conflict, endure under surfaces indelibly marked and scarred by trauma, as if the kiln unleashed the flames of war. Pieces wear a smoked, charred patina, or are scarred by the wires of internment. In the tension between perfection of form and scarified surface, these works invite us to reflect on the extent to which spirit survives trauma, and warn us that the composure of those who suffer only masks damage.
This work has a formal purity that engages us atavistically, a language of forms that speaks of non western as much as classical antiquity, and then takes us further back still, to our first understanding of the potter's fire, and her earth, and her air, and her water. Experiments in glazes and textures, variously serene and scarified, remind us that clay is earth...
